Supporting Learner Self-Directedness and Persistence in a Competency-Based Curriculum Through Automated Tools
Stephen Beers & Nathan Ewings - Instructional Designers, University of Wisconsin

Big ideas:
Focus of work
How do you make a course work without an instructor?
Why do some learners get lost along the way?
How soon should learners start and how late is too late?
How do we help learners persist?

Next steps: add suggested timelines to all self-paced courses; use My Awards tool

Wish list
Personalised calendars - pre-populated with events by course developer; calculate events based on relative dates from time of enrolment; allow learner to personalise the due dates for events

Te Kura takeouts:
Apply analytics for both successful and unsuccessful students - patterns of who started when, where in course they came to a halt, which assessments were more challenging, which more manageable.  Apply conditionally released News items, intelligent agent emails to learner and LA to motivate learner, scaffold and develop persistence

Self-paced doesn’t mean the student doesn’t need structure; getting the balance right so student is not overwhelmed is critical

Need for real-time feedback to keep students on track; including messages such as “How are you doing?  Many students need to spend more time on this activity than others.. “

Staged planning for success messages could be something for us to consider

Use of intelligent agents - 75% of people who do “this” usually succeed; alert to LA/Academic Coach as well as learner when IA sent out; alert to follow up with learner

Announcement Area/News: Congratulations on demonstrating your mastery of <insert competencies>; you’ve completed more than half the competency set! Highly motivational

Images with flags on peaks - first one comes after doing first couple of quizzes
release conditions, pop ups
Use of replacement strings to personalise News; motivational boost

Once assignment comes into dropbox get message while student is waiting for feedback to say great, let’s start planning for next steps now, ie keeps student focused and moving forward

If fail - conditionally released message focused around energy and persistence; (Carol Dweck - growth mindset); offer range of strategies “It looks as if this didn’t go as well as you probably hoped.  It takes most students several attempts to...you could try..."

Personal takeouts:
Learner focused; explicit focus on competency development alongside mastery of content; could integrate NZC Key competency and CLARA language
Loved the visual representation of competency progress on conditionally released News pages
